**ATHENS, GREECE** – A series of earthquakes, including a 4.6 magnitude tremor, have rattled the popular Greek island of Santorini, prompting widespread evacuations and prompting concerns among residents and tourists alike. Over 200 minor quakes have been recorded since Sunday in the area, with the strongest striking between Santorini and Amorgos. A further 4.2 magnitude quake hit near Anafi on Monday morning.
The tremors have led many residents and tourists to sleep outdoors, while others have fled the island via ferry and air travel. Schools remain closed, and authorities have urged people to avoid crowded indoor spaces, derelict buildings, and certain ports as a precaution.
Professor Efthymios Lekkas, head of the Organisation of Antiseismic Planning and Protection, stated there’s a slight chance of a 5.5 magnitude earthquake, but dismissed the possibility of anything stronger. While no significant damage has been reported, the ongoing seismic activity has created considerable anxiety on the island, which welcomed a record 3.4 million visitors in 2023. The high number of tourists raises concerns about the potential impact of a larger earthquake and the challenges of managing a large-scale evacuation.
