Mon Feb 03 14:55:57 IST 2025: **Chennai to Restore Dilapidated Karunanidhi Memorial**
CHENNAI, February 3, 2025 – A memorial structure commemorating the 48th birthday of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is set for restoration. The structure, located in Ashok Nagar, is in a dilapidated state, with broken facade and surrounding debris.
The memorial, erected in 1971, also marks the naming of K.K. Nagar (Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar) under the Kodambakkam-Pudur Housing Scheme Phase II. It was inaugurated by then-Governor K. K. Shah.
Ward 138 councillor K. Kannan has suggested the addition of a statue or gazebo to the site. Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar confirmed the Corporation’s intention to consider the restoration proposal. He also shared historical context, noting that a statue was initially proposed in 1967 but declined by Karunanidhi out of respect for then-Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
