**Mumbai, February 3, 2025** – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after Gandhi accused the BJP of adding 70 lakh new voters to the electoral rolls in Maharashtra, primarily in constituencies where the BJP won the recent state elections.
Gandhi, speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, claimed that the number of new voters added between the Lok Sabha and state elections was equivalent to the population of Himachal Pradesh. He alleged this indicated a serious problem with the election system and called for greater transparency from the Election Commission. He further stated that more voters were added in the five months between the elections than in the preceding five years.
Fadnavis vehemently rejected Gandhi’s allegations, accusing him of insulting the people of Maharashtra and questioning the democratic mandate. In a strongly worded statement and a tweet, Fadnavis called on Gandhi to introspect and apologize, stating that the allegations were slander and that the people of Maharashtra would not forgive such accusations. Fadnavis’s BJP secured its best-ever performance in the state elections with 132 seats, while the Congress won only 16. This follows Gandhi’s earlier concerns about the transparency of the election system in Maharashtra and Haryana, where he claims the Congress has been denied access to voter lists.
