NEW YORK (ESPN) – In a stunning three-team trade that reshapes the Western Conference landscape, Luka Dončić is headed to the Los Angeles Lakers, and Anthony Davis is going to the Dallas Mavericks. The deal, announced late Saturday, also involves the Utah Jazz.
The Lakers will acquire Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris from the Mavericks. In return, Dallas receives Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick. The Jazz receive Jalen Hood-Schifino, the LA Clippers’ 2025 second-round pick, and the Mavericks’ 2025 second-round pick.
Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison cited a desire for improved defense as the primary driver behind the trade, stating, “I believe that defense wins championships…getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance.”
League sources indicate the trade was initiated by Dallas, driven partly by concerns over Dončić’s conditioning and recurring injuries. Reports suggest Dončić’s weight fluctuated significantly this season, leading to extended absences. While he’s currently sidelined with a calf strain, his weight and injury history played a role in the Mavericks’ decision.
The trade, finalized after several days of negotiations, caught even LeBron James by surprise. Sources say James learned of the deal while out to dinner following Saturday’s game. Both Dončić and Davis were also reportedly unaware of the trade beforehand.
This unprecedented midseason swap marks the first time two reigning All-NBA players have been traded directly for each other. Dončić’s move also means he will forfeit eligibility for a potential supermax contract this summer. The Lakers and Mavericks will face each other twice more this season, adding significant intrigue to their upcoming matchups.
