**CHENNAI, February 2, 2025** – Sree Karpagavalli Vidhyalaya Middle School, a Tamil-medium government-aided school in Mylapore, is embarking on a revival effort as it approaches its centenary year. Facing dwindling enrollment – down from 700 students to single digits – a new team of six trustees is working to revitalize the institution, known affectionately as “Dhadi Vadyar School” due to its founder’s distinctive beard.
The trustees, none of whom are alumni but share a deep commitment to the school’s legacy, are actively engaging alumni and the local community for support. They are exploring several strategies to attract students, including addressing infrastructural challenges. The school’s narrow, difficult-to-access location within a slum presents a significant hurdle. The trustees are in talks with the Kapaleeshwarar temple, which owns adjacent land, to create an alternative exit route.
Financial incentives are also under consideration. The trustees plan to leverage the Central government’s Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme, offering ₹10,000 to 50 girls upon completion of middle school. Furthermore, discussions are underway with a nearby high school to ensure seamless admission for graduates of Sree Karpagavalli Vidhyalaya. The possibility of introducing English-medium classes is also being explored.
The school’s historical strengths, particularly its renowned mathematics program, are being highlighted in the revival efforts. Alumni recall a rigorous yet affectionate learning environment where strong mathematical foundations were instilled. A WhatsApp group has been created to connect former students, with plans to expand its reach and facilitate further community involvement. The trustees believe the school’s strong social capital and 100-year history provide a solid foundation for its rejuvenation.
