**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, February 2, 2025** – Following a deadly stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela on January 29th, the Uttar Pradesh government has placed the entire Prayagraj division on high medical alert ahead of the Basant Panchami Amrit Snan on February 2nd. This marks the third and final Amrit Snan, with two more special snans scheduled for February 12th and 26th.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered all medical personnel to remain vigilant to ensure the safety of the millions of devotees attending the festival. Over 1,200 medical personnel are stationed at the Mahakumbh Nagar fairground, with a backup plan in place to handle any emergencies. Major hospitals, including Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital and Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, are on high alert, with increased staffing, bed capacity, and medical equipment readily available, including a 200-unit blood bank at SRN Hospital. Ambulance services and rapid response teams are also on standby.
The government has conducted inspections of all hospitals within the fairground to ensure adequate medicine stocks and equipment. A four-member special medical team is overseeing these inspections. Medical staff have been instructed not to leave their posts until February 5th. The government has also made accommodation and food arrangements for the medical personnel.
The January 29th stampede at Sangam resulted in at least 30 deaths and 60 injuries, attributed to overcrowding. The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13th, is expected to continue until February 26th and has already drawn over 33 crore visitors. The extensive medical preparations reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the pilgrims.
