**JERUSALEM** – Israel has appointed Major General (Ret.) Eyal Zamir as its new Chief of Staff, the Prime Minister’s office announced. Zamir’s appointment follows the resignation of Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, who stepped down after taking responsibility for security failures during the October 7th Hamas attacks in Tel Aviv, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 civilians.

The decision to appoint Zamir was made jointly by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Zamir boasts 28 years of experience in the Israeli army, including serving as Military Deputy Chief of Staff from 2018 to 2021 and commander of the Southern Command, responsible for overseeing military operations and defense along the Gaza border. He also previously served as military secretary to Netanyahu.
