**MUMBAI, INDIA – February 1, 2025** – Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde’s new action thriller, “Deva,” underperformed significantly on its opening day, grossing a disappointing ₹5.5 crore domestically. This is considerably lower than expectations and even trails the opening day collection of the similarly unsuccessful “Baby John,” which earned ₹11.25 crore on its debut.
The film, a remake of the Malayalam film “Mumbai Police,” suffered from poor performance in mass market circuits despite relatively decent occupancy in urban areas. Overall occupancy sat at a mere 10.24%, with morning shows registering a particularly low 5.87%.
While evening and night show occupancy improved, reaching 9.77% and 16.15% respectively, the low overall numbers paint a grim picture for the film’s box office prospects. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh described the film as “disappointing,” citing an uneven screenplay and slow pacing as major drawbacks, despite praising Shahid Kapoor’s performance. Negative audience reactions echoed similar concerns.
Directed by Rosshan Andrews, “Deva” also stars Pavail Gulati, Pravesh Rana, Kubbra Sait, and others. While the film’s makers hope for a boost over the weekend, its weak opening suggests a challenging road ahead to recoup its production costs.
