**Iqaluit, Nunavut –** A remote, unnamed island nestled within a complex series of lakes and islands in Canada’s Nunavut Territory has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest island-in-a-lake-on-an-island-in-a-lake-on-an-island. The discovery, confirmed using Landsat 8 satellite imagery, reveals a roughly 1,000-foot-wide, seahorse-shaped island at the heart of this intricate landform. This inner island sits within a smaller lake, itself located on a larger island within a long, finger-shaped lake approximately 90 kilometers inland from the southern coast of Victoria Island.
Victoria Island, the eighth largest island globally, is part of the vast Canadian Arctic Archipelago, a region characterized by thousands of islands and millions of lakes formed after the last Ice Age. The remoteness of the area means this newly discovered island likely remains untouched by human feet.
The discovery highlights the potential for further undiscovered landforms in this largely unexplored region. While satellite imagery has identified numerous examples of recursive islands and lakes, this “islandception” surpasses all previously known formations in size. The finding contrasts with the temporary appearance and disappearance of a mud volcano-created island off the coast of Azerbaijan, documented by NASA earlier this year. Scientists believe that advancements in satellite technology will continue to reveal more unique geographical features in the years to come.
