Sat Feb 01 18:01:01 IST 2025: ## Karnataka High Court Orders Body Cameras for Exam Invigilators to Curb Malpractice

**Bengaluru, February 1, 2025** – The Karnataka High Court has directed the Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) to implement new guidelines to combat exam malpractice, including the mandatory use of body cameras for invigilators and flying squad members. The ruling follows a petition by a law student who alleged coercion into admitting to malpractice.

Justice Suraj Govindaraj noted the university’s practice of making students sign pre-typed confessions, a procedure deemed insufficient to inspire confidence. The court highlighted the seriousness of exam malpractice, emphasizing its impact on the credibility of the entire examination process and the fairness to other students.

The new guidelines mandate high-resolution body cameras with real-time video recording and uploading capabilities to prevent manipulation. The court also ordered the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in all examination halls and centers, with similar real-time recording and server upload functionality. Furthermore, all proceedings before the malpractice committee, including student statements, must be video-recorded and uploaded to a server. The court specified that the recording process must adhere to Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (the Indian Citizen Protection Code) regarding audio-video recording of searches and seizures. These measures aim to create a transparent and fair examination system for all students in the highly competitive educational landscape.
