**Chennai, India –** India celebrated its 76th Republic Day on Sunday, with festivities held across the nation. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the celebrations were particularly vibrant. Governor R.N. Ravi hoisted the national flag for the fourth time at a ceremony near the Labour Statue on Marina Beach. The event included a flypast by Indian Air Force helicopters showering flower petals, and a rendition of the national anthem. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with other dignitaries including the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Sriram, and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, were in attendance.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards, including the Anna Medal for bravery, bestowed upon firefighter Vetrivel by Chief Minister Stalin. A police parade and a display of decorated government vehicles followed. Cultural performances, including a dance performance to the patriotic song “Tamilē Vāḻka… Tāyē Vāḻka…”, captivated the audience.
Extensive security measures were implemented throughout Tamil Nadu for Republic Day, with over 100,000 police officers deployed. Increased surveillance was also in place at key locations such as religious sites, shopping malls, and cinemas. Security checks at transportation hubs were intensified, with railway police and Railway Protection Force personnel conducting thorough checks at Chennai Central station. Drone flights were prohibited over the Marina Beach celebration area.
