**New Delhi, India** – The Voluntary Tibet Advocacy Group (V-TAG) has launched a multi-pronged campaign to aid victims of a recent 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Tibet and advocate for the accurate representation of the region. Following the January 8th earthquake in Shigatse and Dingri County, V-TAG participated in a candlelight vigil in Delhi, showcasing posters emphasizing compassion and resilience. The group also raised ₹16,500, distributing funds to 11 Tibetan monasteries across India for prayers and butter lamp offerings for the earthquake victims.
Beyond humanitarian aid, V-TAG directly addressed the geopolitical implications of terminology. On January 21st, V-TAG representatives met with the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) in New Delhi, expressing concern over the use of “Xizang” instead of “Tibet” in official communications. Research by a V-TAG member revealed 48 instances of “Xizang” in NCS documents, a term promoted by China that V-TAG argues diminishes Tibet’s identity and has implications for India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh. The NCS Director acknowledged V-TAG’s concerns and promised consideration. V-TAG’s actions highlight the organization’s commitment to both immediate relief efforts and long-term advocacy for the Tibetan people.
