**New York, NY** – OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced a significant outage Thursday morning, leaving thousands of users unable to access the service for several hours. The disruption began around 6 a.m. ET, with users encountering error messages instead of the usual interface. Downdetector, a website that tracks online service outages, showed a massive spike in reported problems during this period.
OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its website, initially reporting “elevated error rates” between 6:33 a.m. and 7:23 a.m. ET. However, problems persisted, prompting a second reported issue at 8:12 a.m. The company later announced it had identified and implemented a fix, with service fully restored shortly after 10 a.m. ET.
