**Hyderabad, January 24, 2025** – Days before the Telangana state budget is announced, civil society organizations are demanding a significant increase in education funding. At a roundtable conference held Friday, representatives from the Social Democratic Forum, Save Education, and other groups called for 15% of the state budget to be allocated to education.
The organizations criticized both the previous TRS government and the current Congress government for insufficient investment in education. They pointed to Bihar’s 18% allocation as a benchmark, arguing that Telangana, despite its high GSDP ranking, is failing its citizens by underfunding essential services like education and health. One speaker condemned the current allocation as “treachery” against the poor.
Participants highlighted the unmet promises made in the Congress party manifesto regarding education funding, noting a decrease from 14% under the previous administration to a current 7%. They emphasized the need for “good education” and expressed their willingness to resume protests if their demands for a 15% budget allocation are not met. The groups cited a past 30-day awareness campaign as evidence of their long-standing commitment to improving the state’s education system.
