**Mumbai, India –** The sixth round of the Ranji Trophy got underway on Thursday, marking the return of several prominent Indian cricketers following the national team’s recent struggles. However, the much-anticipated comeback proved underwhelming for many, with a series of low scores leaving fans and stakeholders disappointed.
Several high-profile batters faltered. Rohit Sharma (3) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) were early victims for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir. Shubman Gill managed only 4 runs for Punjab as Karnataka bowled them out for a paltry 55. Rishabh Pant, who had shown some form recently, could only muster 1 run for Delhi. Even fringe players like Ajinkya Rahane (12), Shreyas Iyer, and Cheteshwar Pujara (6) failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
In contrast, the bowlers dominated the day. Gujarat’s Aarya Desai claimed a remarkable 9 wickets against Uttarakhand, while Rajasthan’s Khaleel Ahmed took a five-wicket haul against Vidarbha.
There were some bright spots. Madhya Pradesh captain Shubham Sharma scored a half-century, and Tanmay Agarwal extended his lead as the tournament’s top scorer, reaching 700 runs with a century for Hyderabad. Tamil Nadu’s 18-year-old Andre Siddarth also impressed with his maiden first-class century.
Ravindra Jadeja was the sole exception among the returning internationals. He shone with a five-wicket haul and a valuable 38 runs for Saurashtra.
Several matches remain closely contested heading into day two, but the underwhelming performance of many Indian stars will undoubtedly be a talking point. The pressure is on these players to significantly improve their performance in the coming days.
