Fri Jan 24 23:22:15 IST 2025: ## India Celebrates National Girl Child Day with Focus on Empowerment

**NEW DELHI, January 24, 2025** – India observed National Girl Child Day today, focusing on the theme “Empowering Girls for a Bright Future.” The annual event, initiated in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, aims to raise awareness about gender inequality and advocate for the rights and empowerment of girls.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of providing girls with the skills, education, and resources necessary to succeed. It aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5, which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

The government has implemented several initiatives to support this goal, including:

* **Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP):** A campaign to improve the child sex ratio and empower girls through education and protection.
* **Udaan:** A program to increase female enrollment in engineering institutions.
* **Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana:** A savings scheme to help families secure their daughters’ futures.
* **Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya:** A scheme to increase educational opportunities for girls, particularly from marginalized communities.

These initiatives are complemented by various other government programs focused on adolescent health, nutrition (POSHAN Abhiyaan), and menstrual hygiene. Legal measures have also been introduced to ensure the safety and rights of girls.

National Girl Child Day serves as a platform to address issues such as gender-based discrimination, child marriage, and unequal access to resources. The government and various stakeholders are working collaboratively to create a society where every girl has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
