Fri Jan 24 16:40:51 UTC 2025: ## Kerala: Rescued Elephant Sparks Debate Amidst Human-Wildlife Conflict

**MALAPPURAM, Kerala, January 24, 2025** – A 16-year-old elephant rescued from a well in Urangattiri, Kerala, has highlighted the ongoing tension between humans and wildlife in the region. The incident, which prompted protests and resistance from local residents, led to the deployment of two trained kumki elephants, Vikram and Konni Surendran, to patrol the forest fringes.

The elephant’s rescue, achieved by breaking the well’s sidewall, came after negotiations with villagers. The government offered ₹1.5 lakh compensation to the well owner, Sunny Koorankallu, and pledged to erect 7 km of electric fencing – key demands of the protesters. These measures, alongside the arrival of the kumki elephants, calmed the situation.

While Divisional Forest Officer P. Karthik reported that the elephant sustained only minor injuries, the incident underscored the growing human-wildlife conflict. The kumkis, usually in high demand in Wayanad due to similar conflicts, were temporarily deployed in Urangattiri, adding pressure on authorities already grappling with a recent tiger attack that resulted in a woman’s death.

The incident also sparked controversy. Elephant Lovers Forum Palakkad district president Haridas Machingal filed a complaint against former Nilambur MLA P.V. Anvar for suggesting that the trapped elephant be buried alive, alleging a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.

Authorities continue to monitor the rescued elephant’s movements and plan to maintain kumki patrols for several days. The event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in balancing conservation efforts with the concerns of local communities.
