**PUNE, INDIA** – Pune city is grappling with a significant outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder causing muscle weakness and numbness. The number of suspected cases has soared to 59, with 35 new cases reported in a single day, prompting concern and action from health officials. The surge follows the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in various parts of India.
The majority of patients (39 males, 20 females) reported gastrointestinal issues prior to developing GBS symptoms, leading Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials to suspect a potential link to contaminated food or water. Twelve patients are currently on ventilator support. The Sinhagad Road area appears to be particularly affected, according to the Neurological Society of Pune.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has requested an update on the situation and is reportedly preparing a response. The PMC is urging hospitals to prioritize prompt diagnosis and treatment.
GBS is characterized by sudden muscle weakness and numbness, potentially leading to breathing difficulties and paralysis if left untreated. While the exact cause remains unclear, preceding infections, including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, are suspected triggers. Diagnosis involves neurological examinations, nerve conduction tests, and lumbar punctures. Treatment typically involves plasma exchange or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy.
Doctors emphasize the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if GBS symptoms, such as weakness and tingling, appear. While the condition is rare, the current outbreak underscores the need for vigilance and swift medical intervention. The rising number of cases, particularly among children and teenagers, highlights a growing public health challenge.
