Thu Jan 23 01:05:38 UTC 2025: ## US Reaffirms Support for Israel Following Gaza Ceasefire
**WASHINGTON, D.C. —** In his first call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since the Trump administration took office, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated Washington’s unwavering support for Israel. The Wednesday call, the State Department announced, also covered the ongoing situation in Gaza, including the release of some hostages following a ceasefire, and the threat posed by Iran.
Secretary Rubio emphasized that supporting Israel is a top priority for the Trump administration. He assured Prime Minister Netanyahu of continued U.S. efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza.
The recent conflict, sparked by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of around 250 hostages, has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel’s subsequent military response has claimed the lives of over 47,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, resulting in accusations of war crimes which Israel denies. A ceasefire, effective January 19, 2025, has facilitated the release of some hostages on both sides.
While rights groups have condemned the humanitarian crisis, the U.S. continues to support Israel, citing the need to counter Iran-backed militant groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi rebels. Secretary Rubio also expressed a desire to address the Iranian threat and pursue opportunities for peace in the region.
