Thu Jan 23 12:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Musk Challenges Trump’s Massive AI Investment Announcement

**Washington, D.C.** – A firestorm erupted Wednesday after Elon Musk publicly challenged President Donald Trump’s announcement of a $500 billion AI infrastructure project dubbed “Stargate.” Musk, a close advisor to Trump, cast doubt on the funding, claiming on X that SoftBank, a key investor, had significantly less than the stated $10 billion secured.

The White House announced Tuesday that Stargate, a new company involving SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, would receive an initial $100 billion investment, with plans for a total investment of up to $500 billion in the coming years. The announcement was made with the CEOs of the involved companies standing alongside President Trump.

Musk’s skepticism, however, is noteworthy, given his proximity to the Trump administration. He revealed that he was present in the Oval Office Tuesday for the pardon signing of Ross William Ulbricht, and that he’d dispatched a SpaceX/X staffer to aid in the pardoning of January 6th rioters.

The conflict appears rooted in Musk’s ongoing legal battle with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, who was also present at the White House announcement. Musk alleges OpenAI has violated its original non-profit mission.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed Musk’s claims in a Fox News interview, urging the public to trust President Trump and the CEOs involved. She emphasized the importance of the project for US competitiveness against nations like China. Altman himself responded directly to Musk on X, refuting his claims and inviting him to visit a project site already underway.

Sources familiar with the project have corroborated Altman’s claims, pointing to SoftBank’s significant cash reserves and the substantial resources of Oracle and OpenAI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also publicly confirmed his company’s commitment to the project.

The controversy highlights the complexities of the rapidly evolving AI landscape and raises questions about the financial viability of the ambitious Stargate project.
