**Srinagar, January 23, 2025** – The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) filed a bail application Wednesday for its leader and Member of Parliament, Sheikh Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail. The application was submitted to the Delhi High Court and is scheduled for hearing today.

Rashid, 57, was arrested in August 2019 and faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) related to alleged terror funding. Despite being granted interim bail in September 2024 to campaign in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, he was required to surrender in October.

The AIP’s chief spokesperson, Inam Un Nabi, stated that the continued detention of Rashid, who defeated prominent political figures Omar Abdullah and Sajad Lone in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, raises concerns about fairness and due process. The party maintains Rashid is a vocal advocate for the marginalized and his imprisonment undermines democratic principles. The AIP is urging supporters to remain hopeful for a positive court outcome and has pledged to continue pursuing all legal avenues for his release.
