Tue Jan 21 18:10:00 UTC 2025: **West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews Makes History with Century in ODI Series Opener**

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Hayley Matthews smashed her eighth One Day International (ODI) century, setting a new record for West Indies women’s cricket, as the home team cruised to victory against Bangladesh in the opening match of their ODI series on Sunday. Matthews’ unbeaten 100 led the West Indies to a comfortable chase of 199 runs, with 110 balls and nine wickets to spare.

This achievement surpasses former captain Stafanie Taylor’s previous record of seven centuries and puts Matthews among an elite group of eight-century players, including Sophie Devine, Karen Rolton, and Laura Wolvaardt. Her knock also propelled her past Australian stars Rachael Haynes and Beth Mooney on the overall ODI runs list.

The West Indies’ opening partnership of 163 runs between Matthews and Qiana Joseph (70) laid the foundation for the win. Deandra Dottin’s three wickets were crucial in limiting Bangladesh to 198/9. Bangladesh will look to rebound in the second match on Tuesday.
