Wed Jan 22 22:16:09 IST 2025: ## Mumbai Salt Pan Land Transfer to Face Legal Challenge

**Mumbai, January 23, 2025** – A public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the Maharashtra government’s transfer of 255 acres of salt pan land for the Dharavi redevelopment project will be heard on January 30th. The PIL, filed by advocate Sagar Devre, alleges the transfer violates environmental regulations and Supreme Court rulings.

The land, comprising parcels in Kanjur, Bhandup, and Mulund, was transferred from the central government to the state despite initial concerns that the transfer contravened the 2012 Internal Policy Guidelines (IPG), which prohibited construction on salt pan land. The central government subsequently revised the IPG in 2024 to allow such use.

The PIL highlights that 58.5 acres in Mulund were transferred to Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited for ₹319 crore in October 2024. Devre argues that the transfer disregarded potential environmental damage and existing legal precedents. The upcoming court hearing will determine the legality of the land transfer and its impact on the ambitious Dharavi redevelopment plan.
