Tue Jan 21 10:05:41 IST 2025: ## Trump Pardons Hundreds Involved in January 6th Capitol Attack

**Washington D.C.** – In a highly controversial move, President Donald Trump has granted blanket pardons to approximately 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the January 6th, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This action, one of Trump’s first official acts in his second term, effectively overturns years of efforts to hold accountable those involved in the attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

The pardons encompass a wide range of offenses, from misdemeanors like trespassing to serious felonies such as seditious conspiracy. Notable recipients include Enrique Tarrio, former leader of the Proud Boys, and Stewart Rhodes, leader of the Oath Keepers, both previously sentenced to lengthy prison terms for seditious conspiracy. Trump also commuted the sentences of 14 others.

The president defended his decision, claiming the individuals involved have already suffered enough and that their treatment was “outrageous.” He cited cases of murderers receiving shorter sentences. This contrasts sharply with the views of Vice President JD Vance, who last week stated that only those who protested peacefully should receive pardons.

The move has been met with swift and widespread condemnation. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the pardons an “outrageous insult” to the justice system and law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol. Critics highlight the injuries sustained by over 140 police officers and the millions of dollars in economic damage caused by the riot.

Over 1,583 individuals were initially charged in connection with the January 6th events, with more than 700 receiving prison sentences. While Trump himself faced charges related to the riot, the Department of Justice dropped the case in November, citing a longstanding policy against prosecuting a sitting president. The president’s decision to grant such widespread clemency is expected to reignite intense political debate and further polarize the nation.
