Tue Jan 21 03:50:00 UTC 2025: **FBI Director and Deputy Director Resign as Trump Begins Second Term**

WASHINGTON, D.C. – FBI Director Christopher Wray resigned from his post on Sunday, December 11th, effective immediately prior to the inauguration of President Donald Trump for a second term. This follows the resignation of Deputy Director Paul Abbate, who stepped down just minutes before Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

Wray’s departure, announced earlier this month, comes amidst strained relations with President Trump, stemming from ongoing federal investigations. Abbate, who assumed the acting directorship upon Wray’s resignation, cited his mandatory retirement age as the reason for his own departure in an internal email. He had served as Deputy Director since 2021.

President Trump has nominated Kash Patel to lead the FBI, though his Senate confirmation hearing is yet to be scheduled. During his inauguration speech, Trump vowed to end what he termed the “weaponization” of the Justice Department. The FBI has yet to comment on the leadership changes. The identity of the acting director succeeding Abbate remains unclear.
