Mon Jan 20 08:47:56 UTC 2025: ## RG Kar Rape-Murder Conviction: Lone Accused Awaits Sentencing

**Kolkata, West Bengal –** Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, faces sentencing today. The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court will pronounce the quantum of punishment at 2:45 pm.

Roy was found guilty on Saturday, two days before the scheduled sentencing. The court cited forensic evidence, including Roy’s DNA found on the victim, as key to its decision. The incident, which occurred on August 9, 2022, sparked widespread outrage and protests across India.

While the CBI, which investigated the case, sought the death penalty, the victim’s family also echoed this demand, expressing deep disappointment with the investigation and alleging that other perpetrators remain at large. A doctor at RG Kar Medical Hospital, Dr. Tapan Pramanik, corroborated these concerns, highlighting discrepancies in the CBI’s findings, such as the recording of 68 movements on CCTV footage but the identification of only Roy.

Roy, a former Kolkata Police civic volunteer, maintains his innocence, claiming he was tortured and forced into a confession. His lawyer argued for leniency, emphasizing the possibility of reformation, even in a “rarest of rare” case. The judge, however, stated that the minimum sentence would be life imprisonment, while the maximum would be the death penalty. The final decision will be revealed later today.
