**Hyderabad, India** – The Telangana government has announced a new initiative to issue ration cards to eligible families who currently lack them. The application process will run from January 21st to 24th, during village meetings (Grama Sabhalu).
This initiative follows the one-year anniversary of the Revanth Reddy government’s formation. The government will utilize guidelines established in 2014 to determine eligibility. Rural families with an annual income of less than ₹1.5 lakhs and urban families with an annual income below ₹2 lakhs will be considered. Farmers owning less than 3.5 acres of irrigated land or 7.5 acres of unirrigated land in rural areas will also qualify.
The process will involve rigorous verification of applications, followed by cross-referencing with the caste census survey. Mandal-level officials (MPDO and Municipal Commissioner) will oversee the process, with draft lists displayed at village and ward level meetings for community review and approval. Existing ration card holders can also add new family members. New cards are slated to be issued from January 26th.
Applications can be submitted via MeeSeva centers or online. Applicants will need to complete a form (available at MeeSeva centers and their website) with personal details, family information, and supporting documents such as proof of residence, Aadhaar card, and a passport-sized photograph. The government warns that changes to the eligibility criteria remain a possibility. Millions of families have long awaited this initiative, and the government hopes this will alleviate food insecurity for a significant portion of the population.
