**Bengaluru, January 20, 2025** – Karnataka’s mango growers are anticipating a bountiful harvest this year, with projections reaching 12 to 13 lakh tonnes, a significant rebound after several years of low yields due to adverse weather and pest infestations.
The Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation (KSMDMC) attributes the positive outlook to favorable weather conditions conducive to fruit formation. Last year, extreme heat caused flower withering, resulting in a mere 30% of the expected yield. This year, while flowering was slightly delayed, the KSMDMC predicts a successful season, barring any unforeseen weather disruptions.
Early varieties like Badami and Senthura are expected to hit markets by the second week of April, followed by Mallika, Bainganapalli, and Rasapuri. Ramanagara district and surrounding areas are anticipated to be the first to bring their mangoes to market, followed by Kolar, Chickballapur, and North Karnataka.
Despite the positive forecast, pest problems persist, prompting the KSMDMC to issue advisories and deploy technical teams to assist farmers in controlling diseases like hopper and inflorescence bud diseases. Recent cloudy conditions and light rain have caused some concern among growers, who fear potential damage to the developing fruit.
The improved yield is a welcome change after 2024, when mango prices soared above ₹200 per kg due to low supply. This year’s expected abundance should lead to more affordable mangoes for consumers.
