**Vellore, January 19, 2025** – Torrential rains pounded Vellore and surrounding districts in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, causing widespread flooding and disruption. Tiruvannamalai district bore the brunt of the downpour, recording the highest rainfall at 126 mm, followed by Vellore (96 mm) and Ranipet (89.50 mm). Jamunamarathur in Tiruvannamalai saw the highest rainfall among towns, at 32 mm.

Low-lying areas in Vellore city, including Sampath Nagar and Kansalpet, were submerged, and frequent power cuts were reported across Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts. Heavy rainfall also impacted traffic on the Bengaluru Highway (NH 44), as many returning from festival holidays faced waterlogged roads. Crop damage, particularly to paddy fields, was reported in Ranipet’s Sholinghur, Thimir, and Kaveripakkam areas. Water bodies in the affected districts are filling rapidly; in Tiruvannamalai, 363 of 697 tanks are at 100% capacity.

As a precautionary measure, temple authorities suspended the rope car service at the Sri Lakshminarasimhar temple in Sholinghur due to the inclement weather.
