Sat Jan 18 22:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Suns Acquire Hornets Center Nick Richards in Trade for Okogie and Picks

**PHOENIX, AZ –** The Phoenix Suns have significantly bolstered their center position, acquiring Charlotte Hornets center Nick Richards in a trade finalized on January 15th. In exchange, the Suns sent Josh Okogie and three second-round draft picks to Charlotte, receiving a 2025 second-round pick in return.

Richards, a 27-year-old from Jamaica, will immediately assume the starting center role for the Suns. His acquisition addresses a critical need after the team removed Jusuf Nurkic from the rotation and saw inconsistencies from Mason Plumlee. Richards averages 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game this season and has a history of posting double-doubles as a starter.

The Suns reportedly considered including Nurkic in an earlier trade proposal, but Charlotte’s demands led to the current deal. The move also saves Phoenix over $20 million in luxury tax penalties, as Richards’ contract is considered a bargain.

General Manager James Jones praised Richards’ rim protection and pick-and-roll efficiency, believing he will be a valuable asset alongside stars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Rookie Oso Ighodaro will serve as the backup center.

While the acquisition of Richards addresses a pressing need, the Suns are far from finished reshaping their roster before the February 6th trade deadline. They remain actively pursuing Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler, a deal which could potentially involve their 2031 first-round pick and require a third team to facilitate a trade for Bradley Beal’s contract. The Suns are eager to see how Richards fits into their system and hope he proves a long-term solution at center.
