Sun Jan 19 15:18:25 UTC 2025: ## Kollam Launches Major Leprosy Detection Campaign
**KOLLAM, Kerala, January 19, 2025** – The Kollam district health department is launching a comprehensive leprosy detection campaign, “Ashwamedham,” from January 30th to February 12th. The initiative aims to eradicate leprosy through early detection and treatment.
Two trained health workers will visit every household in the district to conduct skin examinations. Individuals exhibiting leprosy-like symptoms will be referred to hospitals for free diagnosis and treatment. Health officials emphasize the importance of early detection, noting that symptoms may not appear for 5-10 years after infection, during which time transmission risk is high. Leprosy is entirely curable with timely treatment.
The campaign will prioritize children and focus on reducing leprosy-related disabilities. Currently, 12 leprosy patients are receiving treatment in the district. The initiative involves collaboration with various departments, including local self-governments (LSGs), which will conduct awareness campaigns in schools and communities, particularly in tribal areas and among migrant workers. Cases reported to Homeopathy and Ayush departments will also be relayed to the District Medical Officer.
