Sun Jan 19 13:13:43 UTC 2025: ## India’s Champions Trophy Squad: Suryakumar Yadav’s Absence a Blow, Says Raina

**Dubai, UAE** – Former Indian all-rounder Suresh Raina expressed concern over the absence of Suryakumar Yadav from India’s Champions Trophy squad, calling the middle-order batter a crucial “X-factor” for the tournament. Yadav, along with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, were notable omissions from the 15-man squad announced on Saturday. Five other players from the 2023 ODI World Cup squad – Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan, and the recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin – also missed the cut.

Raina highlighted Yadav’s ability to score at a rapid pace and dominate opponents, stating that his absence leaves increased pressure on India’s out-of-form top three. He believes Yadav’s versatility in batting at any position would have been invaluable.

Regarding the bowling attack, Raina acknowledged concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and Mohammed Shami’s return from injury. While praising Harshit Rana’s performance, he suggested Siraj would be a preferable option should Bumrah’s back spasms prevent him from full participation. He noted that squad changes are possible until February 12th, leaving the door open for Siraj’s inclusion.

Raina lauded the appointment of Shubman Gill as vice-captain, describing it as a forward-thinking move, highlighting Gill’s potential as a future star and Rohit Sharma’s mentorship abilities. He also anticipated crucial roles for Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the spin department, given the anticipated slow, turning pitches in Dubai.

Despite the absences and uncertainties, Raina expressed confidence in India’s chances, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right 11 players from the 15-man squad. He also backed Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicketkeeper over KL Rahul, advising Pant to focus on extending his innings to maximize his impact. With two previous Champions Trophy wins under their belt, Raina believes India possesses the potential for another successful campaign.
