Thu Jan 16 22:46:00 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release Deal Reached, Pending Israeli Approval

**Washington/Doha –** A ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas has been reached, US and Qatari mediators announced on January 15th. The agreement, brokered after 15 months of intense conflict, is slated to take effect on January 19th, initiating a six-week first phase, pending formal approval from the Israeli cabinet.

The deal marks a tentative end to the devastating conflict that began on October 7th, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military response, including a ground invasion launched on October 27th, has resulted in the deaths of over 46,700 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The negotiations, marked by several setbacks including the assassination of key figures from both sides, involved intense shuttle diplomacy and mediation efforts from the US and Qatar. A previous, shorter ceasefire in November resulted in the release of 105 hostages. However, this new agreement aims for a more comprehensive resolution, although 94 hostages remain unaccounted for.

While the deal has been reached, its implementation remains contingent on Israeli government approval. The agreement’s long-term success also remains uncertain, given the history of violence between the two sides. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether this fragile peace will hold.
