**Doha, Qatar –** A long-awaited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Qatar and the United States, has been announced. The deal, effective Sunday, January 19th, 2025, includes a phased release of hostages held by Hamas since the October 7, 2023 attack, which triggered the devastating war. Initial reports suggest 33 hostages, including women, children, and the elderly, will be freed within the first 42 days, alongside an Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza. Further prisoner exchanges will be negotiated during this initial period.
The agreement, hailed by US President Joe Biden and Israeli President Isaac Herzog, follows months of intense negotiations and escalating pressure. The conflict resulted in a staggering loss of life, with official figures indicating over 1,210 Israeli and 46,707 Palestinian deaths, mostly civilians. The deal aims to bring a permanent end to the war, although concerns remain among some Israeli officials. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich voiced his opposition, calling the agreement “bad and dangerous.”
While celebrations erupted in both Gaza and Tel Aviv upon the announcement, Randa Sameeh, a displaced Gazan resident, expressed relief but also highlighted the immense loss suffered. Hamas attributed the ceasefire to the resilience of the Palestinian people.
The three mediating countries – Qatar, Egypt, and the United States – will oversee the ceasefire implementation via a Cairo-based body. The reopening of the Rafah crossing for humanitarian aid is also anticipated. The UN’s refugee agency, UNRWA, despite facing an Israeli ban, confirmed its commitment to providing aid. President-elect Donald Trump also welcomed the deal, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to preventing Gaza from becoming a terrorist haven. The agreement comes just days before Trump’s inauguration.
