**Bengaluru, January 15, 2025** – The International Battery Company (IBC) will establish India’s first lithium-ion battery Giga factory in Bengaluru, commencing production within nine months, Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil announced Wednesday.
The ₹390 crore facility, located in the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) plot within the IT Investment Region (ITIR), will be a joint venture with Mahanagar Gas Ltd. It is projected to create 300 direct jobs.
The factory marks a significant step towards localizing lithium-ion cell production. Currently, IBC imports cells from its South Korean facility to manufacture finished products in India. The Bengaluru plant will produce cells domestically for the first time, initially focusing on batteries for two- and three-wheelers. Future expansion into larger mobility applications is planned.
Minister Patil highlighted the factory’s importance for India’s renewable energy transition, boosting energy storage capabilities and reducing reliance on imports, particularly from China. The facility will also export 20% of its production to the U.S. and EU markets.
