Thu Jan 16 09:26:54 UTC 2025: ## Coimbatore Farmer Killed by Elephant

**COIMBATORE, January 16, 2025** – A 74-year-old farmer, Velumani, was trampled to death by a lone tusker in Coimbatore district on Wednesday night. The incident occurred at Mettu Thottam in Pazhya Pudur near Periyanaickenpalayam while Velumani was securing his farm gates. The elephant, after killing the farmer, reportedly raided banana crops and remained in the area for approximately an hour before retreating into the forest.

Police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem following a complaint. The incident highlights a growing concern over human-animal conflict in the region. Villagers report increasing negative interactions with elephants across the Coimbatore forest division’s seven ranges, involving crop raiding and fatalities. They have urged the Chief Minister to expedite the construction of a boundary fence around the forest to mitigate these risks.
