**New Delhi, January 16, 2025** – The Election Commission of India (ECI) today issued an advisory urging political parties to be transparent about their use of artificial intelligence (AI) in election campaigning. The move comes amid growing concerns about the potential for AI-generated content, including deepfakes, to manipulate public opinion and undermine electoral integrity.
The advisory mandates that all AI-generated or significantly altered images, videos, audio, and other materials used in campaigns be clearly labelled as such. Suggested labels include “AI-Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content.” Furthermore, political parties must include disclaimers when disseminating campaign materials containing synthetic content.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar recently warned of the dangers of AI and deepfakes in spreading misinformation and eroding public trust in the electoral process. This advisory builds upon guidelines issued last year regarding responsible social media use during the Lok Sabha elections. The ECI’s aim is to ensure fair and credible elections in the face of evolving technological challenges.
