**New Delhi, January 16, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of the 8th Central Pay Commission, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced today. The commission will revise salaries for over 49 lakh central government employees and allowances for nearly 65 lakh pensioners.

The decision comes ahead of the scheduled 2026 expiration of the 7th Pay Commission, which was implemented in 2016. Minister Vaishnaw stated that the early establishment of the 8th commission will ensure its recommendations are available well in advance. The chairman and two members of the new commission will be appointed shortly. Extensive consultations with central and state governments, as well as other stakeholders, are planned.

The Central Pay Commission plays a crucial role in determining salary structures, benefits, and allowances for government employees, with many state-owned organizations following its recommendations. This marks the eighth such commission since India’s independence in 1947.
