Thu Jan 16 11:33:44 UTC 2025: ## Washington DC on High Alert for Trump’s Heavily Militarized Inauguration
**Washington, D.C.** – Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration on January 20th is set to be the most heavily secured in US history, with authorities implementing unprecedented measures to prevent a repeat of the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot and address heightened security concerns. The city is effectively under lockdown, with 48 kilometers of seven-foot-high fencing erected, a record for the capital.
Over 32,800 security personnel, including 7,800 National Guard troops and 25,000 police officers from across the country, are deployed. Major streets between the Capitol and the White House are closed off and fortified with concrete barriers and heavy vehicles. This heightened security comes in the wake of a November 2024 assassination attempt against President-elect Trump and several recent concerning incidents, including an attempted weapon smuggling at the Capitol.
While officials state there are no credible, coordinated threats, the focus is on preventing lone-wolf attacks. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have issued nationwide warnings to police, citing the risk of copycat attacks.
“We are in a higher-threat environment,” said Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool. US Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger echoed this sentiment, highlighting the lone actor threat as the main justification for the heightened alert.
Despite the extensive security measures, numerous permitted protests and rallies are planned for the weekend, including both pro- and anti-Trump demonstrations. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed permits have been issued for nearly a dozen events. One large anti-Trump demonstration is expected to draw 25,000 participants, while a pro-Trump rally is scheduled for Sunday.
Homeland security expert Juliette Kayyem of the Harvard Kennedy School acknowledged the extensive preparations are based on a worst-case scenario, expressing hope that the level of security will prove to be more than necessary. The inauguration ceremony will take place on the Capitol steps, the same location of the 2021 riot. This time, however, President-elect Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, has conceded the election.
