Mon Jan 13 17:10:12 UTC 2025: ## Tharoor Rejects 90-Hour Work Week Proposal, Emphasizes Manufacturing Growth

**KOCHI, January 13, 2025** – Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has voiced his opposition to proposals for a 90-hour work week in India, arguing that increased efficiency and quality of work are more crucial than extending working hours. His comments, made during an interactive session with the Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Sunday, contradict recent suggestions by figures like Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy advocating significantly longer working hours.

Tharoor highlighted that countries like Denmark maintain a 35-hour work week, emphasizing the need for a different approach to productivity. He further stressed the critical role of manufacturing in India’s economic growth, stating that the nation possesses the potential to become a global manufacturing hub, especially given the current shift away from China (“China+1” strategy).

However, Tharoor cautioned that systemic challenges are hindering India’s manufacturing sector from reaching its full potential. He noted that countries like Vietnam and Indonesia are actively competing for a share in this global manufacturing realignment. Tharoor’s remarks were part of “The India Forward Talk Series” organized by the Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
