**Bhopal, January 13, 2025** – Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced the renaming of 11 villages in Shajapur district. This follows a similar action last week where he changed the names of three villages in his home district of Ujjain.
The name changes, announced at an event in Shajapur’s Kalapipal tehsil on Sunday, January 12, 2025, include replacing names perceived as having Muslim origins with Hindu-sounding names. Mr. Yadav justified the move by stating that if a village no longer has residents with the name reflected in its title, then a change is warranted. He assured that individual residents could retain their own names.
The renamed villages are: Mohammadpur Machhanai (to Mohanpur), Dhabla Hussainpur (to Dhabla Ram), Mohammadpur Pawadiya (to Rampur Pawadiya), Khajuri Alahdad (to Khajuri Ram), Hajipur (to Hirapur), Nipaniya Hisamuddin (to Nipaniya Dev), Reechdi Muradabad (to Ritchdi), Khalilpur (to Rampur), Ghatti Mukhtiyarpur (to Ghatti), Unchhod (to Unchavad), and Sheikhpur Bongi (to Avadhpuri).
This follows the renaming of Maulana, Jahangirpur, and Gajnikhedi villages in Ujjain district to Vikram Nagar, Jagdishpur, and Chamunda Mata respectively on January 5th. The chief minister’s actions have sparked debate.
