**Prayagraj, India** – Millions of pilgrims converged at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Tuesday for the first Amrit Snan of the Mahakumbh Mela 2025. This sacred bathing ritual, considered the highlight of the Kumbh Mela, saw Naga Sadhus – revered as devotees of Lord Shiva – taking the first holy dip, followed by sadhus from 13 akharas (Hindu monastic orders) and the general public.
The Amrit Snan ceremony, steeped in centuries of tradition, follows a meticulously planned order, with the 13 akharas – divided into Udaseen, Bairagi (Vaishnav), and Sanyasi (Shaivite) groups – participating in a pre-determined sequence. This order, which has been formalized after centuries of observance, reflects the long-standing influence of these akharas in managing the Kumbh Mela.
The tradition of the Amrit Snan is linked to the mythological Samudra Manthan, where droplets of Amrit (nectar of immortality) are believed to have fallen at four locations, including Prayagraj, leading to the establishment of the Mahakumbh Mela at these sites.
Authorities implemented elaborate arrangements to manage the massive crowds, ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of the ceremony. Devotees lined the procession route, collecting the dust from the saints’ feet as a sacred blessing. Four more Amrit Snans are scheduled throughout the month-long Kumbh Mela, culminating in Maha Shivratri on February 26th. The event has drawn global pilgrims, transforming the Sangam into a confluence of faith and humanity.
