**Dakar, Senegal – January 14, 2025** – At least 40 farmers were killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram militants in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Borno state Governor Babagana Umara Zulum confirmed the deaths on Monday, attributing the attack to extremists from Boko Haram and its Islamic State-affiliated faction. The attack occurred in the Dumba community.

Governor Zulum urged civilians to remain within designated army-secured “safe zones” and called for a thorough investigation into the incident by the armed forces. He vowed to take decisive action against the perpetrators.

The ongoing conflict in northeast Nigeria, now Africa’s longest-running militant struggle, has resulted in the deaths of approximately 35,000 civilians and displaced over 2 million, according to the UN. The 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping brought international attention to Boko Haram’s brutality. The group, which began its insurgency in 2009, aims to impose a radical version of Islamic law. The violence has spread into neighboring countries.
