Mon Jan 13 20:13:53 UTC 2025: ## Banks Open Today Despite Lohri, Several Closures Planned for Makar Sankranti
**Mumbai, India** – While today marks the celebration of Lohri in several northern Indian states, banks across the country will remain open for business as usual, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has confirmed. However, a number of bank holidays are scheduled for later this month.
The RBI’s January 2025 holiday calendar lists a total of 13 bank holidays, including several regional and national festivals. While banks will operate normally today, January 14th will see closures in several states in observance of Makar Sankranti. This includes Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad (both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Itanagar, Kanpur, and Lucknow.
Other regional holidays throughout January include closures for New Year’s Day (in select states), Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday (Chandigarh), and several other regional and religious observances. A complete list of dates and affected regions is available on the RBI website.
Despite these closures, customers can continue accessing banking services through online channels including net banking, mobile applications, ATMs, and bank websites. The RBI categorizes holidays into three types: Real-Time Gross Settlement Holidays, Bank Closing of Accounts Holidays, and Holidays Under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Regular closures on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month will also remain in effect.
