**Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu – January 14, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government is undertaking a significant tourism development initiative in Mayiladuthurai district, focusing on the historical Poompuhar complex and surrounding areas. Collector A.P. Mahabharathi announced the ambitious project during a Pongal festival celebration at the Poompuhar Tourism Complex on Monday.
The ₹23.6 crore renovation of the Poompuhar complex, a site of historical and cultural importance, is 85% complete and slated for completion by February. This revitalization aims to establish Poompuhar as a major tourist attraction, capitalizing on its rich history as a significant Sangam-era port city.
Further boosting the district’s tourism potential, the government is also investing ₹10 crore in the restoration of the Danish Fort in Tharangambadi. Plans are also underway to enhance tourism infrastructure in nearby Kodiyampalayam and Therizhandur.
The Pongal festival at Poompuhar, attended by MLAs Nivedha M. Murugan and M. Panneerselvam, showcased Tamil Nadu’s vibrant cultural heritage through folk art performances. Collector Mahabharathi emphasized the state government’s commitment to promoting tourism and its confidence in Mayiladuthurai’s emergence as a premier tourist destination following these upgrades.
