LOS ANGELES, CA – Authorities have arrested a man disguised as a firefighter who was burglarizing homes in the Malibu area during the ongoing devastating wildfires. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed the arrest during a Sunday press conference, revealing he himself nearly fell for the disguise. Sheriff Luna stated he encountered the suspect, who was seated and appeared to be a firefighter, before realizing the individual was actually under arrest for burglary. The suspect is being handed over to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The arrest is one of nearly 30 made in connection with the wildfires. Authorities have reported arrests for curfew violations and other burglaries. Sheriff Luna emphasized the 6 pm to 6 am curfew remains in effect, stating that anyone not involved in public safety or disaster relief efforts will be subject to arrest if found in evacuated areas. The curfew is in place to protect evacuated properties and prevent looting.

The wildfires, which have been burning for six days, have claimed 24 lives, with 8 deaths in the Palisades Fire zone and 16 in the Eaton Fire zone. The situation is expected to worsen with high winds (up to 120 kph) forecast for the coming days. Meteorologists warn the conditions are not improving in the near future. The economic toll is also staggering, with estimated losses already exceeding $135 billion and potentially reaching $150 billion, placing these fires among the costliest natural disasters in US history.
