The expansion to 14 teams, implemented in 2020, continues, meaning only the top two seeds in each conference (AFC and NFC) receive a first-round bye. For the upcoming season, the Kansas City Chiefs (AFC) and Detroit Lions (NFC) will enjoy these bye weeks, securing a spot in the divisional round. This marks a change from the pre-2020 format where the top two seeds in each conference received byes. The addition of the seventh seed has resulted in a less-than-stellar record in the wild-card round, with only one victory out of eight attempts.
