Mon Jan 13 13:58:56 UTC 2025: ## Djokovic Survives First-Round Scare at Australian Open

**Melbourne, Australia –** Novak Djokovic, aiming for his 11th Australian Open title, overcame a spirited challenge from American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy in a thrilling four-set victory on Monday. The 37-year-old Serbian star, seeded seventh, ultimately triumphed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, but not before Basavareddy, making his Grand Slam debut, pushed him to his limits.

Basavareddy, coached by former pro Paul Goldstein (who Djokovic defeated in the 2006 Australian Open first round), played aggressively, mixing winners with deft drop shots. He dominated the first set, breaking Djokovic’s serve multiple times and showcasing impressive composure against the veteran champion. The crowd roared its approval as the 19-year-old held his nerve against Djokovic’s relentless attacks.

However, Djokovic eventually found his rhythm, breaking Basavareddy’s serve in the second set as the younger player began to cramp. From then on, Djokovic’s experience and power prevailed, enabling him to secure the remaining sets.

Despite the loss, Basavareddy received high praise from Djokovic. “In the end it was great, but he was the better player for the first set and a half and he deserved every bit of applause he got as he left the court,” Djokovic commented, predicting a bright future for the young American.

Djokovic will next face 21-year-old Portuguese player Jaime Faria in the second round as he continues his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
