Mon Jan 13 15:37:38 UTC 2025: ## Millions Immerse in Kumbh Mela’s Inaugural Holy Dip Amidst Tight Security

**Prayagraj, India** – The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, commenced today with the first holy dip on Paus Purnima. Over 1.65 crore (16.5 million) devotees took the auspicious bath at 44 ghats by 6 pm, according to official figures. The event, occurring under a rare celestial alignment not seen in 144 years, drew pilgrims from across India and internationally.

The sheer scale of the event resulted in approximately 3,700 people becoming separated from their families. However, most were reunited through the mela’s lost and found center. Authorities maintained a strong security presence, with helicopters showering flower petals and NSG commandos monitoring the crowds. Devotees from at least 20 countries, including Germany, Brazil, and Russia, participated in the first ritual bath.

Many pilgrims embarked on a 45-day Kल्पवास (Kalpvas), a period of spiritual devotion and penance. One Brazilian devotee, Francisco, expressed his pursuit of “moksha” (liberation) and described India as the “spiritual heart of the world.”

The massive influx of devotees led to the closure of vehicle access to the Sangam confluence, forcing many to walk up to 12 kilometers from bus and railway stations. Over 60,000 security personnel, aided by CCTV surveillance, are managing the crowds and maintaining order. Reports indicate arrests for various offenses, including missing identification documents and filming women without consent.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the pilgrims and praised the collaborative efforts of the administration, volunteers, and media in ensuring a smooth first day. Positive feedback regarding the organization and arrangements was expressed by several international attendees. The event’s significance in Hindu faith, and its unique celestial alignment, are highlighted. The Kumbh Mela continues with further major bathing events planned, including the Shahi Snan (royal bath) tomorrow.
