**UDHAGAMANDALAM, January 12, 2025** – The Nilgiris district police have launched a new community policing initiative called “Village Police Officer” aimed at improving communication and addressing grievances directly from villagers. The program, inaugurated Thursday by Nilgiris District Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha, assigns police personnel to one or two villages each for weekly visits. During these visits, officers will document villager concerns in a police station registry, escalating significant issues to senior officials.
The initiative’s goals include crime prevention, improved safety for women and children, reducing school dropouts, raising awareness about drug abuse, and anti-Naxal activities. Police hope the program will bridge the gap between law enforcement and the public, fostering improved surveillance and information gathering. The Village Police Officer program will be implemented across all villages in the Nilgiris district.
